The Digging Dog

The holes in your yard are an indicator of one of the challenges many dog owners face, how to keep the dog from digging. Remember you're not alone in your stuggle!

Why Do Dogs Dig?

There may be several reasons why your dog may be tearing up your yard. If you're going to correct the issue, you must know the underlying cause. Here are some reasons why your dog may be dedicated to that hole:

She is bored
The Digging Dog

You dog feels a need for shelter

He is trying to clean up, and is trying to bury the "extra" food

Your companion He is is mimicking what they've seen other animals doing

He is curious and desires adventures (the ground is full of new smells and attractions)

Your Companion is seeking your attention, and youve given it to him, even if negative.

Stopping Your Dog's Digging

Although we may want to, yelling at your companion is not the best solution for your digging problem Rather, try to identify why your companion is digging, then try one of these solutions:

Try socialization. One reason why your dog may be digging up your yard is because he sees the neighbor dog doing it or it could be he's trying to get to the neighbor's dog. In either case, the solution can be getting more socialization into your dog's schedule. If you have some time, take your pet to a dog park a few times a week; otherwise, try finding a quality doggie daycare.

Try changing toys. Dogs will dig if htey are bored, or looking for entertainment and adventrure. Toys like the Kong toys will help provide this entertainment. This would need to be coupled with other strategies in order to prevent your dog from getting bored.

Inspect your yard for rodents, reptiles and burrowing animals. Be sure to call a live animal catcher or pest control specialist to take care of these animals, both for the sake of your lawn as well as the health of your pet.

Get a dog house. Dog have the need for shelter, much like people, especially female dogs. If this need isn't satisfied, they will dig to make a shelter. A dog house will help meet this need and thus stop the digging.

Try some chicken wire. If nothing else worked, try buring some chicken wire 1-2 inches under the soil, and extending several inches from where your pet normall digs. When she digs, the sensation when he hits the wire will discourage her from digging there again.

Taking time to fully understand why your dog is digging will save you time, money, and your sanity...not to mention your dog's happiness.
