A reputation for rotten dentition is often ascribed to the British. The absence of perfect white gleaming teeth doesn't mean, does it, that all our teeth are bad? Our casual attitude towards how our teeth look needn't mean that we practice poor oral hygiene but it does suggest that we are failing to make the most of our opportunities.

A person's smile, whether appealing or otherwise, is one of the first things that is noticed by others. It is often not realised that an appealing smile can frequently bring about a successful deal. Whether it is a first date, a job interview or closing a sales deal, the outcome can be hampered by that not so perfect smile.

The shortage of jobs caused by the recession means that job applicants must use every trick they can to increase their chances of being taken on. Clean fingernails and polished shoes are not the only relevant aspects of one's appearance at interviews. All aspects of an interviewee, especially the smile, are assessed.

Job seekers are now adding "dental visit" to their list of to-do's because they know that the first impression is the one that counts. The usual procedures carried out by dentists in the past were fillings or extractions. Today a visit can also include cosmetic dentistry as well as professional cleaning, polishing and whitening.

Quite often, cosmetic surgery replaces old silver amalgam and gold fillings with composite fillings made of a porcelain-like material that actually bonds to the tooth for a tight seal. As well as being stain-resistant and strong, composite fillings are inconspicuous as a result of being colour-matched to the surrounding teeth. A further advantage is that, unlike silver amalgam fillings, composite fillings never produce sensitive reactions.

Other times, the teeth may be repaired with a veneer, which covers the face of the tooth. Veneers are used to hide discoloration's and stains that cannot be resolved with professional cleaning, or they are used to hide other cracks and imperfections. Clean symmetrical teeth will be the result.

Is the cost justified?

Clearly one must ask the obvious question: is the cost justified by the advantages conferred by obtaining a great smile? YES, they definitely do! An indifferent smile creates a poor impression and suggests low self-esteem. The employee with low self-esteem will have limited chances of promotion and will be less productive and profitable for the employer.

A popular misconception is that good dental care, particularly cosmetic dental care, is exorbitant. Actually, prices have been reduced considerably by the current keen competition. Cosmetic dentistry is no longer the preserve of a few specialist dentists.

The cost of all your dental care needs as and when you need such treatment will be covered by having a dental health plan. Although cosmetic treatments are not covered by most dental insurance plans, it may still be worth your while to spend your own money on them.

It's very important that you buy dental insurance that covers basic dental treatments and emergency treatment when abroad. Always consult your dentist about any dental treatment, cosmetic or otherwise. Whatever you may have heard or read you shouldn't forget that only your dentist has professional knowledge.

Your opportunities will increase considerably once you have a great smile. Put dental health care at the top of your job-hunting preparation list and get your smile in tip-top condition.
