Design Your Wedding Cake

Apart from the wedding dress, designing your wedding cake can be one of the most important decisions in the planning of your wedding. The cake is always the centre of attention for photographs, guests, and really can represent the look of your special day. I have created a list of suggestions and types of cake to choose from as you plan.

Although white cake has been the most popular and continues to be a wedding staple, you can add a special twist by adding flavours like apricot, strawberry, or buttercream. If you"re more of a chocolate gal instead, you can really have fun with flavour as it will always be a hit with your guests. Bring colour to your chocolate cake by adding a floral treatment on top and around the base of the cake. If you can"t choose between white and chocolate, you can still have your cake and eat it too! Opt for a marble cake that is mix of the two. It"s delicious and has a playful style.

If you are designing your wedding cake for a summer wedding, try doing something different like a tart and refreshing lemon cake. Fresh lemon can be very tasty and a delightful surprise for your guests. Pastel colours work perfectly with this option and can be very beautiful when decorating.

For weddings in autumn, a carrot cake can be the perfect choice. Once sliced, the rich colour of the cake as well as the taste will sure to be a hit. You can really have fun with the decorations for this one and incorporate warm and earthy tones.

Of course when you design wedding cakes we can"t forget to talk about everyone"s favourite: The Frosting. Buttercream is the most popular choice for its universal appeal. It must be stored in a cool temperature so if you are having an outdoor wedding be mindful that this may not be the best choice. Fondant is the most decadent looking of frostings as it is rolled into a sheet and laid over the cake. It can be the most beautiful in decoration as many different shapes can be made and elegantly placed. Keep in mind that fondant is not particularly tasty so adding a layer of a better tasting frosting underneath would be a good move.

After you have worked with your chosen baker on the height of the cake, you will need to decide on what your options are for decorating it. Using fresh flowers is a unique and organic way to add colour and romanticism. Using traditional decorations like ribbons are also a popular choice for simple yet elegant cakes. If you are after something different try using techniques like creating faux lace and pearls or crystals.

Once you have the idea of your wedding cake design all you have to do is create it! Consulting with your baker is also very helpful in that he or she will have plenty of creative ideas and thoughts into making your cake extra special.
