Child growth needs adequate calorie supply for energy and proteins for proper and healthy development. A child should get healthy foods and stay away from the fast foods for healthy development. One of the essential nutrients for children is omega 3. Mothers should supply their kids with essential nutrients; one of them is giving children omega 3 fish oil.

What is omega 3?

Omega 3 fatty acids are essential and healthy fatty acids. They are essential as the body cannot synthesis on them alone. The body should get them from external sources. Omega 3 is composed from two main fatty acids, DHA and EPA. Both of them are essential for the proper development of children. Fish oils are considered as the richest sources of the omega 3 fatty acids.

Why omega 3 is important for children?

The importance of the omega three fatty acids starts from the intrauterine life, as they are essential for the nervous system formation. 70% of the brain consists of lipids, half of them are DHA, so the omega 3 plays a strong role for brain development. Pregnant women should receive adequate supplements of the fish oils for the foetus. There is a study showing that the omega 3 supplements during pregnancy decreases the premature delivery occurrence.

Omega 3 fatty acids is very important after delivery, as they are important for the visual acuity, lactating women should also receive the fish oil supplements to feed her child if the child is breast feeding, or if the child is milk fed, he or she should receive omega 3 fortified formulas.

Omega 3 fatty acids are essential in early life for the proper brain maturation, so children should get adequate amounts of the omega three.

The omega 3 and the ADHD

There are many studies were done to show the effect of the omega three on children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, the study showed that the cell membrane of plasma cells and the red blood cells of those children have unbalanced amounts of the omega 3 and omega 6 . Giving children omega 3 fish oil acts to decrease the hyperactivity and to improve the attention.

Omega 3 and the cognitive function and mood

Studies showed that children born to mothers supplied regularly with the omega 3 fish oil during the pregnancy and those children who get their fed supplied with adequate amounts of the omega 3 have higher cognitive functions. Also the omega 3 improves the mood and decreases the depression.

The omega 3 and inflammatory diseases

It still needs more studies, but some have shown that the babies with adequate omega 3 during the intrauterine life and infancy period are less susceptible to asthma occurrences.
