subject: A Beginners Guide To Buying Art [print this page]

Art is a fantastic way to spruce up your home, no matter where you live and how large or small the building is. Art is always the center of attention and is a great conversation starter. With different artists all over the world, it may be difficult to buy the art, if you don't know anything about it. Thankfully, no matter where you are purchasing the art or how expensive it is, there is a simple guide to follow when buying the art, in order to ensure your purchase is a wise investment and is able to satisfy your art cravings.

Research

If you are going to an art auction, you need to make sure and research the artist. This if often the case with older pieces that have been around for hundreds of years. You need to know about the artist, why he/she created the work and what to look for. This is going to help you select a painting or other piece of art during the auction. It is also a good idea to see how much the individual's work has been going for in previous auctions. You don't want to significantly overbid for the work (unless, of course, you simply like the piece that much). Buying art is also an investment, especially for exceptionally old pieces. If well maintained it is possible for the work to increase in value, especially as the demand rises.

Authenticate

When you buy a piece of art from an auction, make sure the work is authenticated. When buying old artwork from an auction, the piece should come with a letter of authenticity. This is more for you, in case you ever need to insure the work or if you look to sell the work later. This is a very important document to have. If the artist is still alive the artist is able to provide the letter, in addition to the signature on the piece.

Street Art

When visiting places all over the world, there are going to be street artists, many of which are exceptionally good and often sell their work for a very good price. This is a great way to support the local artists, while obtaining a piece that really works well in your home. When buying such a piece, just make sure to ask what the story of the piece is, so when your guests ask, you are able to tell them what the piece means and what it stands for.
