Secret Feature Of Ios 5 Gives You Auto-correct Keyboard

Are you unsatisfied with your virtual keyboard on your iPad or iPhone? Did you have an Android phone before you got the new iPhone 4S? Are you missing the auto-correct keyboard that came with the Android? If you are, there is an Android-like auto-correct keyboard you can enable with some fairly simple finagling, without jail-breaking your iPad or iPhone. According to an article by Andrew Couts, Digital Trends, The closeted feature, first reported by Mark Gurman at 9to5Mac, was uncovered by Australian hacker (and 9to5Mac researcher) Sonny Dickson. Unlike the panorama camera mode, which requires jail-breaking your phone which can void your Apple warranty, the auto-correct keyboard is merely hidden.

Heres the process (courtesy of Mark Gurman, 9to5Mac) to turn it on:

1. Download iBackupBot (a program that allows users to edit files backed up to iTunes)

2. Backup your iPhone/iPad to iTunes

3. Open iBackupBot, find your most recent backup and load it.

4. Go to: Library/Preferences/com.apple.keyboard.plist and open the file. (Hint: Sonny explains that if your software isnt registered youll have to press cancel and then it will open.)

5. Heres the important bit. Add this code to the file you just opened: KeyboardAutocorrectionListsYES

6. Save the file, and restore your device from within iBackupBot.

Do you really want to do this? There are some comments on Mark Grumans post that may have you re-thinking whether or not you really want to enable this feature. Apparently as you type, you have to hit the confirm button. The majority of the time, when you correctly type a word, it'll still force you to choose a different word to select in substitution. This makes texting very slow! There is less screen space available with this option enabled, and you lose the auto-select feature in the TO box, so you have to manually type in any email address you want to send to. The overwhelming opinion on Gurmans post was that it wasnt worth the trouble of installing the auto-correct keyboard. As always, any time you change your phones system, you can expect some glitches. While enabling this hidden feature doesnt negate your phones warranty, you should do so with caution. Im not sure how easy it would be to reset the Apple device back to the original keyboard.

The bottom line? Dont bother installing this feature. Theres a reason it is hidden. Its not ready for prime-time!
