subject: What Is Heartburn And What Are The Causes and Treatment? [print this page]

Some people may have experienced it and may not know what it is. So what is heartburn exactly? Heartburn is a condition that manifests as a burning sensation or feeling in the chest. It is felt under the breastbone or the sternum. Unlike its name, heartburn is not associated with the heart rather it is connected with the upper digestive tract.

Heartburn is medically known as pyrosis. It happens when the lid of the stomach or the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) muscle inappropriately opens and allows gastric acids to flow into the esophagus. Normally, the LES muscles are kept closed after passage of food into the stomach to contain the food bolus and acids. There are some factors that cause the LES muscle to loosen up or slacken. The acid reflux that contains hydrochloric acid, bile and pepsin may "burn" the esophageal lining and cause pain in the chest.

What is heartburn and some of its symptoms? Heartburn has several symptoms and may not all be present in one person. It includes sharp pain in the chest usually radiating from the stomach and may reach the throat. Once the acid reflux reaches the throat, a bitter or sour taste may manifest. Frequent presence of the acid reflux in the mouth may case enamel and tooth decay for some.

Difficulty swallowing foods and liquids may accompany the burning sensation in the throat most especially when the throat lining has already been damaged by too much acid. Sharp pain in the chest felt after bending down or lying down is aggravated especially after eating large meals.

What is heartburn called when it happens more frequent than usual? A heartburn that occurs more frequently than usual is called a chronic heartburn. This type of heartburn must be consulted with a doctor for immediate treatment. Frequent exposure of the esophagus and throat to gastric acids causes strictures and may lead to esophageal ulcer, bleeding and even cancer.

Doctors may prescribe prescription strength medication to lessen the gravity of the discomfort brought about by the heartburn. Operations may also be necessary to repair the damaged parts of the esophagus and to repair the LES muscle.

What is heartburn treatment? Heartburn may have several treatment and prevention. Some may be natural or home-made treatments such as herbal infusions of chamomile, cinnamon, and sage. Drinking of fruit juices of mangoes, papayas, pears, guavas, apples and bananas also soothe the stomach and bring instant relief from heartburn.

A home-made antacid using a teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water may also be taken to treat heartburn. Eating unsalted almonds or soda crackers upon feeling heartburn may also help relieve the discomfort. Medical means of treating heartburn includes the use of over the counter drugs such as antacids, H2 blockers and proton pump inhibitors (PPI's).

There is very little difference as to what is heartburn in pregnant women compared to normal people. The same process happens though treatment may be limited because of the delicate condition of the mother and child. It is still best to consult your physician when dealing with heartburn during pregnancy before taking any medicine for the pain or discomfort.
