There is always this stereotype of plumbers, that they are dirty and messy and money grubbing. Sure, there are always people in every profession to give it a bad name, but that does not mean that all workers in that profession are terrible.
In fact, most plumbers have a lot more knowledge than they are given credit for. There is a fair amount of chemistry and physics, and even some biology involved in plumbing. A septic tank is not a common plumbing solution anymore, but for people who still have one, a plumber who knows the biology of a septic tank is invaluable.
Chemistry comes in when a plumber can tell you what and how your pipes are corroding or freezing, and what kind of pipe they should be replaced with to eliminate that problem. That keeps your house from flooding, stops mold from growing in the walls and keeps the stains off the walls, just to name a few of the potential problems.
Physics is something the contractor should know and have set your house up for, but a plumber knows and maintains the precautions the contractor put in. A sump pump is installed under the basement of a house to pump extra water out of the house, especially if the basement is below the water table, or where excessive rains make a basement hard to keep waterproof.
So, as you can hopefully see, plumbing is about more than sticking gum and duct tape on a leaky pipe and charging an arm and a leg for the service. With sump pumps, frozen pipes, even drain cleaners are more involved than most people give them credit for. Hiring the right person, the right plumber who understands all of these, is educated and experienced and still honest and able, it really is a big job, but not too hard. Sure, everyone wants the best price, but picking the best plumber means you should not be looking for a hand out. Keep in mind this person should know what they are doing and have extensive education. Just because they work with their hands does not mean they do not are any less intelligent.
Find a good plumber and be willing to show your appreciation for all their knowledge.
