subject: Dental Veneers Repair Damaged Smiles [print this page]

If you are suffering from low self-confidence due to problems with your teeth, you might want to think about getting porcelain dental veneers to fix your broken smile. Broken, discolored or uneven teeth can be completely fixed by attaching veneers to the front of your teeth. Patients all over the country have seen their smiles completely change by using veneers and if you are dealing with certain tooth problems, you might find that they can help you too.

Deciding To Get Veneers

An important thing to understand about dental veneers is that they are permanent and irreversible. As part of the process of installing them, a dentist will buff approximately half a millimeter of your front teeth off in order to make room in your mouth for the veneer. Thusly, the process cannot be undone. Because of this, for minor tooth issues dentists usually will recommend using a less invasive procedure. If a patient has only some slight discoloration of the teeth and acceptable functionality, usually the dentist will recommend a teeth whitening. Using the same logic, dentists will generally perform a crown on individual teeth. If there is a problem with multiple or all of a patient's teeth, the dentist may recommend going forward with a veneer procedure.

What Veneers Can Correct

The main problem that veneers can remedy is the wearing down of enamel. Enamel is the hard substance that covers your teeth and protects them. Over time, due to genetic factors combined with what you eat or drink, the enamel begins to deteriorate. Rather than allow for the inner tooth to be exposed, a veneer can act as replacement enamel and function as a protection for your teeth. With the wearing down of enamel over time, teeth are also more likely to chip or break. Veneers can help to strengthen your teeth and allow this to no longer be a problem.

Uneven teeth, caused by grinding or general wear and tear, can also be remedied by dental veneers. With veneers, a smile that was once uneven can be transformed into one that is perfectly straight and white.

The Process Of Getting Veneers

In most cases, a patient will visit their dentist three times to finish the process of getting veneers. The first visit will entail diagnosis by the dentist and going over the rest of the treatment process. On the next visit, the dentist will buff the front of the teeth and take a mold in order to create the customized veneers. The third and final visit will see the dentist bond the veneer onto the front of the teeth. He or she will attach the veneers using cement and then use a light or laser to harden the cement and fasten the veneers to the teeth.
