subject: Can You Judge Watches From Pictures Online? [print this page]

If youve previously tried to buy watches online, you know that there are a wide variety of ways that different retailers present their goods. Some try to convince you of the trendiness of a particular timepiece by showing a stylish model or sports figure wearing it. Others want you to consider their watches as elegant accessories for successful business people, and so show a busy person in an expensive suit checking the time as they conclude a business deal. Still others show images of only the watch, but these photos are at many different angles, with different lighting, and different backgrounds.

What they all share, however, is an attempt to present a given watch in a manner the retailer believes is most likely to result in the buyer wanting to purchase that watch. Among all the different watches Australia residents have to choose from, can you really make an informed decision just from a thumbnail photo?

Some of the things that youll want to consider when choosing a watch are things like the overall weight of the watch, the size of the watch face, the snugness of the bands fit, and the ease of fastening the clasp. Youll also want to consider if the band or clasp has any protrusions that may get caught if you use that hand for operating a computer mouse or keyboard, or if you wear clothes with lace or open knits.

Given the vast number of watches Australia residents can select from, however, its equally likely that youll at least consider brands you have not worn before. This is where a picture may fall short of telling you everything youd like to know. Clearly, you can weed out all possibilities that do not match your personal sense of style by eliminating certain materials, colours, dial shapes, or styles of numbering. You can choose plain gold timepieces, ones with fancy features such as multiple time zones, or ones that have diamond or other gemstone accents. You can choose ones that can be read in the dark, either because they are luminescent or because they have a tiny light inside them.

If you want to buy watches online, however, youll need to carefully read the descriptions provided by the retailer or manufacturer in order to determine what the product photo does not show you. Only then can you truly know things like weight and size which are not clear from a photograph.
