Currently, completion of phase 1 of the expansion project is over. In this phase, car parks and pick up and drop off areas of the airport have been completed. A turning point in the airports history came when Cayman Airways started their operations to Panama City. Nowadays, many cheap flights to Grand Cayman Islands are available.

The airport is located at a prominent location. It is located about 3ks away from George Town, capital of the Grand Cayman Islands. Handling about one million passengers annually, the airport is located adjacent to the Half Way Pond. For number of local carriers, this airport has proved to be quite significant.
