subject: Pros And Cons Of Replacing Real Life Meetings With Virtual Meetings [print this page]

The Internet has brought about great changes in everyone's lives. Now you can research on any topic under the sun, see and talk with your friends/relatives who are sitting in another country, listen and download music, movies and what not. The list of things that you could do on the Internet is endless. But here we'll be talking about one of the main by-products of the Internet - social networking websites. These websites have given everyone a new way of life. Now you post what you are doing, where you are going, basically you can share whatever you want on these websites. But there are certain pros and cons of these websites, especially when it comes to the fact that they are replacing real life meetings with virtual ones.

Let's take Facebook as an example. The real essence of this website is to help you connect with your friends and/or relatives. This can be true for your present set of friends, your high school friends whom you catch up with or the new friends that you make on Facebook. If you have an online reunion, then there are a few advantages as well as disadvantages of the same.

In an online reunion, you can selectively choose whom you want to talk with. This will help you to avoid those weird moments when a guy smilingly comes up to you and you don't know his name. You also don't need to worry about the fact of how you look when on Facebook. No one will come to know about that slight bulge of your stomach on a Facebook reunion, will they? This will avoid that unnecessary anxiety that you have when you're going for a reunion.

Oh! And who can forget the fact that you get much better food at your house than at any other reunion? You also don't have to spend way too much to reach to the venue of the reunion. The venue has come right to your place.

The drawbacks of virtual meetings are that you lose that personal touch to your meetings. You can't see whether your good friend from high school is happy or not. You can't shake hands or hug anyone on Facebook. Also, you can hardly talk with someone on a one-to-one level. Thus, a Facebook reunion makes it difficult for you to interact with one friend at a time. Another disadvantage is that if the reunion is huge, it will be difficult to manage so many people.

So if you ever want to have a 'real' high school reunion, do you see the point of it? Absolutely not, as you know what your friends are doing and can also see how they look by the photos they uploaded.
