subject: Making The Choice For A Nanny Agency [print this page]

Parents who choose to enlist a nanny for help with the family should be treating the process like a business transaction. You do not speak with a mere handful of nannies and simply choose whomever in a matter of a few hours. These are your children, this is your family. You are entrusting your family with someone you do not know. The smart choice is to rigorously research nanny agencies to make the process, at least somewhat, easier.

Choosing a nanny agency is a much smarter decision than simply putting up an ad and hoping for the best. Why? Because a nanny agency does most of the legwork for you. Anybody off the street can answer your ad, say she has a degree in child psychology, and years of experience. But a reputable nanny agency has the resources to delve into potential candidates' backgrounds and ensure they are who they say they are. But just because the agency is doing most of the work, doesn't mean you can point your figure to the first agency you see and go along with them. You need to actually research the agency itself too.

Obviously the agency should have years of experience, with a reputation for excellence to go right along with it. A nanny agency that has been around for quite some time will have the interview proceedings down to a science. They will do nothing to jeopardize their reputation among the community. They should offer diverse mix of potential nannies too. If you are a Spanish-speaking family, wouldn't you rather have a nanny who is accustomed to your culture and can converse with your child in your native language if you so choose? Are there nannies who are experienced with special needs child care? These are important factors and questions to ask.

But even after you spend time choosing the right agency, the process isn't over. You have to still grill a few nannies that have been deemed a potential good match. Don't be afraid to ask as many questions as you feel necessary to get a better feel for the person. She's looking after your children, you want her to be the best possible match. Everyone has different expectations and you and your partner need to figure out what it is you want.

While there is certainly nothing wrong taking your time to find that perfect match, there is such a thing as being way too picky. Nannies are human beings after all and no one is 100% perfect. But with the right nanny agency on your side, you can feel confident in picking a suitable match.
