Breast Surgery

Many women who have the capability and have wish to have full admirable breasts over many years have turned to breast surgery.Breast surgery is a among the many types of surgery and it is particularly carried out on the breast.It emerged in the late 19th century and parrafin injections were the first to be used but they were later banned since they had dangerous side effects.After this,fat injections were also used,sponges made of polyvinyl materials then soybean oil implants were also used and over the years the art of breast surgery has been perfected and currently both saline and silicone are being used in implants.

There are many types of breast surgery performed today depending on the patients conditions or desire.To begin with,lets look at mastectomy which involves removal of the whole breast and sometimes with other tissues surrounding it.Simple or total mastectomy involves removal of the whole breast but underarm lymph nodes are not removed.Double mastectomy involves the removal of both the breasts as a surgery to prevent women who have a high risk of getting breast cancer from it.There is also skin sparing mastectomy which deals with the areola and the nipple.Modified radical mastectomy is also another type of mastectomy which involves simple mastectomy and auxillary lymph nodes are removed.In radical mastectomy the entire breast,pectoral muscles plus auxillary lymph nodes are removed.Mastectomy is used in treating cancer.

Another type of breast surgery is the breast conserving surgery which is also known as segmental or partial mastectomy which involves removal of the affected part of the breast only.The part to be removed depends on the location and size of the tumor among other various factors.This procedure is less radical than mastectomy.Lumpectomy removes discrete lumps from the breast that is affected.In quadrantectomy there is more breats tissue removal compared to lumpectomy.A quarter of the breast is usually removed.

Breast augmentation or augmentation mammoplasty is also another type of breast surgery done by women who wish to increase the feel,fullness and size of their breasts.It is also done by women having deflated or sagged breasts after giving birth or women who have unevenly sized or shaped breasts and wish to correct them.Implant placing in this procedure is always focused on the areola of the nipple.It takes averagely 2 hours.Breast augmentation results are more tremendous.Fat graft mammoplasty and breast implant procedures are employed here.

Lastly lets look at breast reconstructive surgery which may be considered after undergoing breast conserving surgery or mastectomy.It is used to restore the appearence of the breast after surgery.It has many options and they fully depend on the desires and the medical condition of the patient.One might decide on having breast reconstruction while undergiong mastectomy.This is known as immediate reconstruction.One can also decide to undergo breast reconstruction later.this is reffered to as delayed reconstruction.The various types of breast reconstruction surgery use silicone or saline implants while others use tissue from other body parts.this is referred to as autologous tissue reconstruction.
