Knowing About Heartburn And Dizziness Can Prevent Life-threatening Problems

For more than 80 million individuals living in America, heartburn is a harsh reality. It can come about for various reasons. Maybe the meal is too oily or too spicy, it was too much food to eat at one time, beginning a exercise routine right after eating or something as simple as bending forward might be all it takes to start a heartburn episode. If it's mild, we deal with it or take an antacid. If it's bad, we see a doctor. Generally, we're not overly concerned. But, heartburn can be the result of several other health conditions and it is very important to know what to expect and to recognize symptoms which require quick trip to the emergency. Especially if your dealing with heartburn and dizziness.

Stomach acid entering the esophagus and burning it is what is described as heartburn. It can cause pain all the way up to the mouth. The reason for acid to be able to back up is because of a loose or damaged valve, actually a muscle, between the stomach and esophagus. This condition is known as GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease). It is the acid that causes all the symptoms: burping, pain behind the chest, unpleasant feeling in the throat and mouth. If acid continues to burn the esophagus, it could lead to the erosiion of the esophageal lining which may eventually lead to cancer of the esophagus.

Some people with GERD have mild symptoms, such as occasional heartburn. Others really suffer and experience symptoms like sharp pain behind the chest, the inability to sleep, nausea after every meal, burping and bloating. Some even get dizzy as a result of the anxiety of knowing a heartburn episode is about to occur. If your heartburn is accompanied by dizziness, shortness of breath, nausea, chills and pain in the chest, seek medical help immediately.

If you find that those pains in the chest are frequent, it is important to see a doctor. Only proper exam can determine if your heartburn is the result of too many burgers, or you have a heart condition. It is good for your peace of mind to eliminate potentially serious condition or get treatment before the condition become life-threatening. Your doctor can also tell you what symptoms come with GERD and may put you on a mild diet. If your doctor prescibes proton pump inhibitors, make sure to ask about side-effects. One side effect is dizziness, so that's why it's very important to know the difference between a side effect and the fear of heart troubles. It's also good to know the side effects because they will let you know if the treatment is worse than the illness.

Having heartburn caused by GERD does not mean that you do not have some other health issue as well. Carrying too much weight can be the cause of both heartburn and health issues. There could be other health conditons occurring with you if you simply take no action against your heartburn. Getting regular health screenings are very important. It's crucial to get proper treatment for your reoccurring heartburn so you can prevent serious condition like esophageal cancer.
