subject: Share The Thrill Of Adventure With Your Family On Activity Holidays [print this page] Single parents Single parents
Family holidays abroad can be a daunting experience for single parents. Looking after children abroad on your own can be tiring and lonely. It's not always comfortable to spend time in a hotel full of couples. You can spend an adventure holiday together with a small group of single parents. Both children and parents make new friends and enjoy lots of thrilling new experiences. These could include camel trekking through a desert, cruising around Antarctica, or going on a safari to see elephants and waterfalls.
Toddlers
The minimum age for children on adventure holidays is usually two years. Toddlers are not capable of camel trekking in the desert or hiking over mountains, but they can still accompany parents on adventures. You do not have to resign yourself to several years of buckets and spades on seaside holidays.
Try a horse-drawn carriage ride around cities like Marrakech or Fez in Morocco. Kids will enjoy the sight of water sellers in the old city square. Explore the Berber villages around the foothills of the Atlas Mountains in small groups of about 10 to 20 people. Walk through the cedar forests that are cool and refreshing even in the height of summer.
Teenagers
Older children and teenagers are apt to sneer at the thought of a holiday with parents even in the most fascinating destinations. Many teens may not be enthusiastic at the idea of spending two weeks in a remote cottage or visiting museums and churches. Combine city stays and adventure in South Africa. Stay in Cape Town for a few days and enjoy the coast and surfing. Take a few days on a safari inland. Very few teens will decline a holiday in Belize and Costa Rica exploring the rainforest.
Unusual destinations
Take a trip at Christmas time to northern Finland and stay in an ice hotel. You can learn how to walk in snowshoes, ride a toboggan and spend the night in a room made of ice. There are also visits to Santa Claus for children of all ages.
If your children are fascinated with space travel and rockets, visit Russia's "Star City". This is the space training centre just outside Moscow. You can see a full size model of the Mir space station and a space module that simulates weightlessness.
Family adventure holidays are rarely better than when searching for dragons. Sail around the islands of eastern Indonesia in a traditional schooner. You will see volcanoes, coral reefs and crater lakes. The dragon search begins at Komodo and Rinca islands. Komodo dragons are huge lizards that grow to more than 10 feet in length and live on a diet of wild deer and carrion.
Food
Children can be very fussy eaters but on family adventure holidays abroad it's best to let them try the local dishes. Countries with major tourist centres, such as Thailand, offer children's menus of local and international dishes. The kids will be far happier eating unusual foods on holiday than back home. Always remember that some of the best kids' treats in exotic places are deep fried insects. They are highly nutritious, very tasty and the kids love them.
Children will appreciate being taken on an exciting holiday and it may even foster an interest in a new hobby or sport. They will certainly enjoy showing off their holiday snaps to their friends.
