subject: Teeth Whitening- The Way To Get The Bright Smile You Desire [print this page]

If you are one of the countless people that are unhappy with the color of their teeth, it may be time for you to consider taking it upon yourself to make a change. Thanks to increases in whitening technology, today there are a variety of whitening options available to you that can offer tremendous results. And with options available to fit any budget, there is certainly a whitening option for you if you look for it.

In-Office Whitening

The quickest and most effective way to whiten your teeth is to have your dentist perform the procedure in a single appointment at his or her office. After talking with your dentist to make sure that you are a candidate for in-office whitening, he or she will begin the process by evenly applying whitening gel to the front of your teeth. After this, your dentist will generally shine a special light or laser onto your teeth that will activate the hydrogen peroxide in the gel, which is the ingredient that physically changes the coloring of your teeth. This process is then repeated several times to maximize the amount of whitening. When this is complete, your teeth will have become significantly whiter. In all, the appointment will usually only last between one and two hours.

Take Home Whitening Kits

Another popular method for teeth whitening is to receive a customized take home whitening kit from your dentist. If you and your dentist decide that this is the best option for you, he or she will begin the process by taking detailed impressions of your teeth in order to create your personal whitening trays. Once they have arrived from the dental lab, they will fit perfectly onto your teeth. When you are at home, you will apply whitening gel to the trays and then wear them on your teeth for about one hour. After repeating this process every day for two weeks, you will be able to see very positive results. Some take home whitening systems instead require you to wear the whitening trays overnight.

Over The Counter Whitening

In addition to dentist-approved methods, there are a number of over the counter whitening products available to you. Whitening strips, gels and toothpastes can be easily found at almost any drug store. Since these products do not generally contain the same level of hydrogen peroxide as dentist-approved methods, they cannot offer the same level of results. In addition, an over the counter product is not specifically tailored to your teeth like a dentist-approved method is. However, an over the counter option can work for you if you are only looking for some moderate whitening or do not want to spend very much money.
