subject: Geocaching With The Family On The San Juan Islands [print this page] Geocaching is a family fun activity that many people are taking an interest in and there is a lot of geocaching available in the Puget Sound area including the San Juan Islands and Orcas Island. Since there are some people who havent participated in this type of outdoor treasure hunt before, here is some information for participating while youre visiting us here on your Orcas Island vacation.
What is Geocaching?
In a nutshell, Geocaching is a low cost, real-world, outdoor treasure hunt using GPS-enabled devices. In the past, it was somewhat limited because very few people had handheld GPS devices, but with the prevalence of cell phones and handheld devices with GPS on them, the activity has expanded to include just about anyone who wants to participate. The goal is simple, participants log into a sit to find out where a container known as a geocache (Geo- meaning earth and cache meaning a hiding place).
How to Geocache in on the San Juans
First, you need to sign up for a free membership. Then you just select Hide & Seek a Cache on this website with the zip code 98250 and you will be given a list of coordinates where caches are hidden. Select one, set your GPS and start trecking to your geocache.
Once youve found the geocache, be sure to sign the logbook and maybe take a few minutes to see who else has been there. It will give you a real sense of just how small the world really is and how adventurous people are. Dont forget to take some pictures and leave an interesting item in the container for others to find. You can leave anything you want, but taking some time to consider the treasure you leave behind can make it really fun for the next person or family who finds that cache.
Why Geocache?
Geocaching is a great way to explore a new area, especially with a family. This is because it needs to be done with everyone paying attention to where they are going, as well as with everyone walking, or hiking. Taking the time to hike through an area gives you a chance to really experience the environment in a way that doesnt happen when riding in a car or even on a bike.
There is a very active Geocaching community in the Puget Sound area and theres even an annual event held each summer on San Juan Island. We hope youll take the time to join us in bringing our world a little closer together.
