The most important piece of camping equipment you can bring with you is a water bottle. You probably know this but make sure your kids do too. You can make do without certain items but a water bottle is not one of them.
When it comes to buying a tent you have a few options. If you are buying a tent to set up and sleep in at the end of a long hike go with something simple. Something you can easily put up at the end of the day or even when it's getting dark. If you are hanging out by a campsite for most of your trip, you may want to go with more complex tent that is more conducive to hanging out around. You want people to able to comfortably nap in the tent on a hot afternoon.
Whatever tent you choose, make sure you have enough room for everybody. If 5 people are going on the trip buy a 5 person tent. If 6 are going, get two tents. You may think that one person can sleep under the stars, but that can be a problem. Bugs, rain, and other issues can turn what seems like an idyllic idea into a real headache. You may end up sleeping in the back seat of your car!
Make sure to outfit yourself and your family with the right camping apparel, not only for their benefit but for yours. You want to enjoy nature not have your kids complain that uncomfortable boots are hurting their feet or that their backpack is slipping off. I would highly suggest long socks to prevent tick and other insect bites as well.
Insect repellent is another must. Spray your family thoroughly or after 2 hours they will be itching like mad and complaining like crazy. Also pack after bite because even if you use a DEET heavy spray some bugs will still bite.
No matter how much camping gear you buy there will be some whining, but it comes with the territory of enjoying the great outdoors with your family.
