subject: How To Make A Family Activity Out Of Yard Work [print this page]

Even day-to-day chores can be quite enjoyable when you do them together as a family. You don't need to dread the day when you have to do all of those chores and outdoor jobs such as cultivating flowers, raking dead leaves, and weeding; turn them into fun games with your family, and you'll actually be enthusiastic about doing them! Some of these tasks may be things which even your youngest children will be able to do, and they're sure to love getting to participate in pitching in with the big kids. Doing your outside chores as a family not only makes things more fun and entertaining, but also assists you to greatly reduce the amount of time it will take to get everything done. The next time you find yourself with a nice weekend afternoon and outdoors chores that need to be done, elect it to be a family yard work day.

Some Enjoyable Tasks that Can be Done as a Family Unit

Your day of family yard work could consist of just about any chores, provided that they aren't dangerous. If you make things fun and convert them into a game, then your kids will take pleasure in the things that you consider to be hard and boring, such as pulling weeds or raking leaves. Try holding a race to see who can create the biggest pile of raked leaves in the shortest amount of time. Or, give everybody a work bucket, announcing the first person to fill their bucket with weeds they pulled as the winner. Planting the vegetable garden is another activity that can be fun when worked on as a family. In fact, this fun can continue all summer, if you assign a vegetable variety or a specific row to each family member. As the summer goes by, you can remind your children of the progress they've made in the garden by taking snapshots of the garden as it develops, and displaying these photos in picture frames. Have a competition to see who is able to keep their garden plot weed-free, or who can pick the biggest sack of green beans. It will not be long before your kids will actually be thrilled about getting to do jobs in the garden. When the growing season is over, call a family meeting for the purpose of planning next year's garden. Regularly scheduled "garden planning sessions" could take place all through the cold winter days. You may be amazed at the way looking through garden seed catalogs can brighten up a dreary winter day and offer the inspiration that you are needing to get moving.

Remembering Family Days of Yard Work

Just as it is with other family activities, it is important to preserve some of the memories through pictures, journals and other mementos. One thing you may do is record the progress in your garden's development in a garden scrapbook. You might choose instead to collect several pictures of your family working together outside, and display them as a collage inside a picture frame. You and your children will have a great time looking back and remembering those times as time goes by and your kids get older.

Just remember, your perspective is really what decides whether or not daily chores are a fun thing for your family. So go out there and get your work done, and make many awesome memories with your loved ones in the process!
