Travel In Spain With A Rental Car

Spain is a travel destination filled with so many options that it warrants taking the road less travelled and hiring a rental car. Choosing a car over public transport allows visitors to create their own customised itinerary without having to rely on buses, trains or taxis. Additionally, many beautiful regions of the country are not well serviced by public transport and are only accessible by car. As an added bonus, car hire prices start at just 7/day, so there has never been a better time to take advantage of this opportunity.

Considerations

Thankfully, many large and reputable car hire companies have offices in Spain and are present at most major airports in the country. Like most places, the general minimum age to hire a car is 25, with some companies offering availability to anyone above 23 for a reasonable extra fee. As far as driving through the country is concerned, motorways do not typically pose any problems. Driving in the city, however, is a bit more of a challenge. The mix between lax driving rules and busy inner-city streets can make for a stressful journey. Add to this prohibitive parking fees and it is best to try and avoid extensive city driving in Spain.

Best Areas of Spain to Visit by Car

Spains Andalusia region is perhaps the best suited for car travel. Covering the countrys stunning southern coastline, visitors can find excellent deals on car hire from Malaga Airport which is conveniently located along the Costa del Sol. The drive along the coast is stunning and there are beautiful beaches scattered all throughout the area. For a change of pace, many tourists turn inland at Motril and head towards the Sierra Nevada National Park. Hikers and nature lovers should not miss this wonderfully rural slice of Spain. Popular for trekking, horseback riding and other outdoor activities, the region is well suited for camping but also is home to comfortable lodges and hotels.

Also located in Andalusia is the city of Cadiz, one of the oldest cities in Western Europe. It is easily accessible by car from many of Spains larger cities including Madrid, Cordoba, Seville and Barcelona. Cadiz holds many ancient treasures and boasts an unmistakable skyline. Residents of this ancient city enjoy great quality food and visitors to Cadiz should not miss indulging themselves in some local cuisine. The shellfish from this city is some of the freshest in the world and for those who enjoy bar hopping, local fino (dry sherry) and manzanilla (wine) are not to be missed.

Outside of Andalusia, Catalonia and Spains Basque country are two regions which should be considered. Both offer different dimensions of Spanish culture and visitors will get to experience contrasting architectural styles, food and more. Dotted with villages, farms and small cities, driving around Spain is one of the best ways to get a real feel for the country. Much of Spain remains rural and idyllic, though this is a quality that is not often seen by visitors who travel between major cities by train.
