The Growth Of India And Its Automobile Industry

Over the last decade India as a country has rapidly developed and evolved into becoming one of the major front-runners in the race to become a superpower. The stronghold of power is slowly but gradually shifting from the west to the east, and India is one of the major countries witnessing this change. This entire change that is taking place has meant India has seen several advancements in al fields from construction to retail. With things like cracking major nuclear deals with superpowers like the united states of America to constructing world class sky scrapers across the major metropolitan cities, India has come a long way and undergone a lot of change in the last decade. This change has been witnessed across all fields, and one industry that has seen the most change is the automobile industry. This is one change, which we can all see from our own eyes.

In the 1990s and the early part of the 2000s the Indian car market was extremely niche and ruled by just a couple of local car manufacturers. Back then each segment had just about two or three cars to choose from, the hatchback segment had the exceptionally successful maruti 800 and the Daewoo Matiz, in the sedan segment you could choose from the Maruti Esteem, Hindustan Motors Contessa and the few foreign cars like the opel astra and the Daewoo Cielo. The SUV segment had the lone Maruti Gypsy and thats about it.

Today however, all this seems like a distant and hazy memory, and almost every car manufacturer you may have ever heard of has set up shop in India. The likes of Toyota, Volkswagen, Honda, Skoda, Hyundai, Nissan, Renault and many more have opened up in India and are trying everything in their hands to grab a major share of the Indian market. Cars are being launched at the drop of a hat and literally every morning you open the front page of the newspaper there is a large front page ad of some car thats going to be launched soon sprawled across the entire first page, its difficult to even keep count of the number of cars being launched. Every segment has an entire array of cars from which you can choose and also each car model has several different variants, which are distinguished on the basis of features and power in most cases.

An entire new segment has come up over the last few years, its called the MUV (multi utility vehicle) segment. This segment consists of cars that are of the same size as SUVs but do not have such powerful four-wheel drive engines. MUVs arent meant for off roading and driving on rough terrain but for convenience for large families to travel within the city. The few multi utility vehicles in India are the Toyota Innova, Maruti Suzuki Omni and the Mahindra Xylo. This segment has spun up a storm in the market and seems to be the newest thing in the Indian automobile market.
