subject: Gran Canaria Is The Ideal Vacation Spot For A Good Family Vacation [print this page] If you'd like to steer clear of the cold winter and possibly enjoy july temps during the whole year, in that case Gran Canaria definitely is the right spot for you!
Are you seeking a place in which the sun constantly shine, and where it is summertime temps all year-round? Gran Canaria is actually located closer to the African coastline, than the coastline of the mainland of Spain.
Nobody would want to spend a holiday on the island without at least one visit to the capital Las Palmas, on the north-east coast. In fact you can combine your visit with a day on the beach, as Las Palmas has three of the best beaches on the island, with Playa de Las Canteras to the west being considered the finest.
Further south from Las Palmas is the old town of Aguimes, an outstanding example of the traditional hill towns of the area. There is so much to explore here, particularly the Guayadeque Ravine where you will see a complete cave village dug into the side of the hill, with its cave bar, cave restaurant and cave church. Aguimes is also home to Europe's biggest collection of crocodiles at the Cocodrilo or Crocodile Park, where you can also find plenty of other animals including camels, jaguars and monkeys, plus a spider house.
Two of the most popular resorts on the island are located close together on the south coast, but are very different. Playa del Ingles is known as the party capital, and is the place to visit if you like bars, clubs and nightlife. Maspalomas is more family friendly and seen as more upmarket, offering some luxury accommodation. Its unique feature is its vast area of sand dunes, resembling the Sahara Desert landscape, between the resort and the beach. Many people enjoy walks or camel rides here.
About six miles inland from Maspalomas is Palmitos Park, a subtropical oasis and botanical garden, and one of the island's most popular tourist attractions. There is so much to see here that it can quite easily take up a full day, with plants and orchids, over 200 species of exotic birds, and a huge collection of animals including apes and crocodiles. There is also a large butterfly house, and the park regularly puts on exhibitions and displays. The attraction of Palmitos Park is enhanced by the surrounding mountains, so you see beautiful vistas at every turn as you wander through.
A bit further west, the old fishing village of Puerto de Mogan, at the entrance to a steep sided valley, has a claim to be the most picturesque place on the island. This is the place to be if you love doing things in and on the water. You can go out to the open sea on a boat to watch dolphins, or take part in all sorts of water sports including jet skiing and sailing - there is sailing tuition too. Puerto de Mogan is also one of the best places on the island for deep sea fishing.
This is just a few of the things you can do on a vacation in Gran Canaria. It doesn't really matter what you wish to do during your vacation. Gran Canaria has everything!
