subject: The Effects Of Steel Fabrication In The Economy [print this page]

The iron and metal industries are known as the backbones of many industrialized economies. Steel is one of the fundamental ingredients in many types of industries. It is composed of different kinds of elements such as carbon, iron, sulfur, manganese, silicon and oxygen.

When carbon is combined with iron, it serves as a hardening agent that gives steel its durable characteristic. However, the amount of carbon used is limited to only 2% because the more carbon mixed to iron, the more brittle the steel will become.

Steel is produced by isolating oxygen from an iron material. The iron is then heated for up to 910 degree Celsius. Water or oil may be used to get rid of the oxygen molecules. While the oxygen is being removed, carbon combines with iron to make steel.

The Steel industry indicates or signals the economic development of any country. Since the introduction of steel smelting method by Henry Bessemer in 1856, it signaled the emergence of steel as a significant building material in industrializing a nation.

Almost everything are made out of steel, the vehicles we use for transportation are made of steel, the sink in your kitchen area also happens to be made out of steel, even your house or your office is made up of steel frameworks. Heavy machinery, kitchen utensils, pipelines, power line posts and a lot of other useful things are made from steel. Even your house of office building is constructed with steel frameworks. Therefore, steel is considered as an important aspect of our everyday lives, as it provides a lot of useful things that we enjoy and benefit from.

How do You Fabricate Steel?

To maximize the use of steel, it goes through a process called fabrication. It involves three main stages, forming, cutting and assembling. Steel fabricators create different forms and shapes of steel through different fabrication techniques. Their work is guided by a blue-print design that is usually provided to them by the structural engineers. A steel fabricator transforms the blueprint design into a usable steel end product.

There are two types of steel fabrication procedures. The first one is called the raw material approach. Others call it the intergarated route method of steel fabrication. A lot of steel fabricators prefer this method. Through this technique, the materials are subjected to very high temperatures. The melted materials are mixed with steel to create the desired product.

The second method involves an easier and quicker process than the integrated route method. It is known as electric arc furnace. It also makes use of molten steel and composed of a number of procedures. Such procedures include refining, melting, furnace charging, de-slagging and tapping.
