Pet Insurance For Indoor Cats?

A common debate we often hear is whether cat should be kept indoors and if pet insurance is essential for a cat that stays inside 24 hours a day.

Needless to say, a cat that is allowed to roam freely will probably benefit more from pet insurance as the risks of being hit by a car or being injured by predators are high. However with an indoor cat, pet owners often question what could possibly go wrong if the cat stays at home all his/her life and paying for pet insurance for indoor cats is just a waste of money.

Unlike outdoor cats, the risks that indoor cats are exposed to are slightly different. Pet insurance can protect you against these risks.

- Becoming obese or overweight due lack of exercise

- Staying safe when outside because they may be disorientated and will not have any street skills like an outdoor cat

- Ingesting plants, poisons and cleaning products that are often stored indoors.

- May developed behaviour problem if they are stressed by the lack of the instinct behaviour.

Indoor cats which do not have the opportunity to hunt or burn off excess calories as compared to outdoor cats are prone to becoming overweight. Being overweight can lead them to several health problems:

- Gastrointestinal problems including constipation and pancreatitis

- Breathing problems

- Joint, ligament and tendon issues

- Over exertion of the heart

- Skin disorders from being unstable to clean himself properly

- Diabetes

Pet insurance can help protect indoor cats and relieve pet owners of any financial burden should the cats have any health problems due to their indoor lifestyle. Pet insurance is for the unforseen and unexpected. An indoor cat has a lifespan of 14 years, wouldnt you want to keep him/her healthy?

Regardless if you have an indoor or outdoor cat, pet insurance gives you the peace of mind when owning a pet and relieves you of the financial burden of paying those expensive vet fees.
