Keeping An Eye On Your Dogs Weight

When it comes to dogs, its very easy to over feed them. Giving them too much dog food is only going to make them overweight, placing them at higher risk of developing diseases like heart problems, diabetes, DM in dogs, breathing problems, just to name a few. As such, its ery important that you help your dog stick to its ideal weight. Below are a few simple tips to help do just that.

Dog food

Dog food contains all the important vitamins and nutrients your dog needs. When picking out a brand, try to stick to the kind thats made from organic material. Since dog food is already pre-mixed, you dont have to give your dog extra supplements.

Meat

If you feel that its better to give your pet something that you prepared yourself, then its best to give it beef. Dogs basically have the same diets as humans, only they need more protein. Ask the butcher for the best cut of meat to give to your pet dog and cook this to prevent salmonella contamination before giving to the dog. Also, ask your vet for the right serving portion for your dog.

Food supplements

Giving your pet an all meat diet means that you have to give it food supplements. Aside from protein, your dog also needs other vitamins and minerals. Many pet shops and vet clinics offer food supplements for your dog. Pills and tablets are a bit challenging to feed to your dog, especially if it moves around a lot. Try to get the one thats inside a tube which looks like paste, which you can easily mix with your pets food.

Exercise

To keep your dog in shape, its important that you give it the right amount of exercise. Although exercise time varies from breed to breed, you need to make sure you take your dog out for a walk or a jog a few time a week. Exercise will not only maintain the dogs weight, it also helps develop strong muscles and bones. It can also prevent nerve problems and illnesses such as DM in dogs.

Underweight dogs

Overfeeding is not the only problem when it comes to your dogs weight. Some dog owners actually dont realize that their dog is underweight, especially if its covered in a big, bushy coat. Its best to go to the vet every now and then to give the dog a checkup and see if its maintaining an ideal weight.
