subject: Causes Of Gallbladder Cancer [print this page]

Gallbladder Cancer is a rare form of cancer, in which malignant cancerous cells develop in the tissues of the gallbladder. This type of cancer is known to be almost five times more common in women than in men. Gallbladder cancer begins in the innermost layer and grows through the outer layers as it progresses.

The causes of gallbladder include:

Cell changes: Gallbladder cancer develops when the cells of the tissues of the gallbladder change or mutate improperly. Mutation of the cells happens due to changes in DNA. Certain cancers are caused by inherited DNA. A persons family history of gallstones increases his/her risk of getting gallbladder cancer.

Obesity: Obesity contributes to a number of cancers, including gallbladder cancer. A persons risk of getting gallbladder cancer can be lowered by controlling his/her weight.

Gallbladder Polyps: Abnormal growths which occur in the tissues of the gallbladder are known as polyps. With time, these polyps can become cancerous. The gallbladder might require surgical removal if polyps are found inside it.

Exposure to Asbestos: Asbestos has long been known as a cancer-causing agent. Various studies have established that prolonged exposure to asbestos can increase a persons chances of developing gallbladder cancer.

Nativity: The occurrence of gallbladder cancer shows peculiar racial and geographical variations. It is found mostly in the people living in Japan, Northern India, Central and Eastern Europe and Central and South America. It is also found in some specific ethnic groups such as the Native Americans and Hispanics.

Other causes: Smoking, exposure to excessive sunlight, exposure to certain cancer-causing agents and chemical exposures raise the risk of a person developing gallbladder cancer.

The disease is generally diagnosed at a later stage, making it difficult to cure. Different treatment options include surgery, radiation, chemotherapy or a combination of these. However, the most effective treatment known for gallbladder cancer is the surgical removal of the gallbladder.
