The Trend Of Online Chatting

Online chat refers to any kind of communication over the Internet. Primarily, it is described as direct one-on-one chat or text-based group chat using means such as instant text-messaging. The word chat means informal conversation. But there is some etiquette for the users which describes the basic rules of online chat communication. To avoid misunderstandings and to simplify the communication between users while chatting online, some basic rules and guidelines must be followed, which generally depicts basic courtesy. For this purpose, the term chatiquette is used. It differs from person to person. The entire community, or rather we can say, the entire world is connected to the Web, making our wide world turn into a Global Village!Internet chat-rooms and rapid live conferencing allow users to interact with whoever happens to co-exist in cyberspace. Once you sign up, the user is introduced into the chat community and the associated network culture. Despite being virtual, chat can often be dangerous, as there are many fraudulent and imposters trying to search for your personal information.Due to the advent of computers, human lives have become easier and faster. Internet technology has made us socialized more than ever before. Each person is connected with a click of the mouse and keyboard! The trend of personal computer and laptop has increased tremendously in recent years. But, as everything has good and bad sides, online chatting has also been criticized in todays society. Many people are accusing it for replacing proper English with short, slang words forming an almost new hybrid language. With chat-rooms replacing many face-to-face conversations, it is necessary to be able to have quick conversation as if the person was right there with you. So they type very fast and in short, as they would normally speak, to catch up with the conversation. But in doing so, one loses his ability to learn proper grammar, spellings and punctuation. With the increasing population of online chat-rooms, there has been a massive growth of new words created or slang words.Swen Birkerts, a researcher, says, As new electronic modes of communication provoke similar anxieties amongst critics who express concern that young people are at risk, endangered by a rising tide of information, over which the traditional controls of print media and the guardians of knowledge have no control.Another report in a journal article, Teenagers in Cyberspace, tells us about an investigation of language use and language change in Internet chat rooms. Teenagers and young people are leading the movement of change as they take advantage of the possibilities of digital technology, drastically changing the face of literacy in a variety of media through their uses of mobile phones, text-messages, e-mails, web-pages, and online chat-rooms. This new trend is viewed with concerns by the educationists. It is obvious that younger people tend to be more adaptable than other sectors of society and in general, quicker to adapt to new technology, so they are the innovators. They can utilize computer technology positively, in the best possible way.
