subject: Ideas For Creating A Bedtime Routine For Your Baby [print this page] Many new parents complain of being constantly tired. The reason for this is lack of sleep. Babies have a difficult time sleeping on time and through the night in their initial days at home. But you can create a bedtime routine to help your baby sleep better and grab a good rest for yourself as well.
Babies are cute, lovable, enchanting but they are a lot of hard work as well. Taking care of a baby is a 24x7x365 job and you are on call every minute of the day. That said, you and your baby can both be refreshed and better prepared for the day every morning only if you sleep well. This means, you need to create a bedtime routine- something the baby will understand, remember and eventually feel comfortable and relaxed to go to sleep peacefully.
The best time to start working on this routine is when your angel is 6 weeks old. Line up a few activities, set a pattern to follow every night and the baby will get in to the habit of going off to sleep after all the bedtime activities are done. Such a routine will reassure the baby and the consistency will allow him to sleep soundly- secure in the knowledge that everything is familiar and routine.
Some of the bedtime activities you can take up include:
Bathing & Washing up: Babies love water and bathing. They enjoy splashing around and this activity tires them too. So whip up a warm bath and let him have some fun in the water. It will be a great bonding time if both the parents give baby this final night time bath. As time progresses or if you have an older child, you can include brushing teeth and washing hands and feet in this routine. In winters or circumstances, you can create a general cleaning routine. This can include changing his diaper, making him wear sleepwear or pajamas, and basically getting ready to sleep.
Chatting up & Bidding goodnight: Take your baby around the house to other family members and make them wish the baby good night. You can also make the baby wish good night to his favorite toys or picture books or other things. This will imbibe the understanding that at night everything and everybody goes down to sleep. He wont feel he is missing on something while asleep. Tuck him inside and then have a chat with him. This could be general nothings about what he will wear tomorrow or eat tomorrow or when he will go to the park. As the baby grows this talk will no longer be a monologue and will become a dialogue. The toddler will talk back and enhance his recognition of new words and language skills.
Storytelling, music, singing & Lullaby: Babies love it when you sing to them. A soft lullaby lures them to sleep and slowly drift off. Babies are calmed by lullabies and your baby will love the fact that you are singing to him. You can also get a player and put gentle soothing music on as it can also help the baby relax and slowly fall asleep. As the baby grows, you can switch from lullabies to stories. Read them from a variety of bedtime stories and soon story time will become their favorite time of the day.Create a relaxing bedtime routine and buy a comfortable baby bed and your baby will sleep longer and more comfortably through the night.by: Leena Khalil
