Avoiding Cavities During Invisalign Treatment

Having Invisalign put in by a Bronx dentist instead of traditional braces has many advantages, including the fact that they are essentially invisible, saving you from feeling self-conscious about having braces. Its still possible to get cavities while wearing Invisalign braces if you are not careful. For that reason, if you procure Invisalign from a Bronx dentist, you may want to familiarize yourself with the following tips and suggestions in order to keep your teeth in the best condition possible:

1. Always brush and floss your teeth before putting Invisalign in your mouth. When you got your Invisalign from a Bronx dentist, you were probably told to wear them almost all the time with the exception of when youre eating. That means that you put them in your mouth again after you eat, and you should therefore brush and floss after every meal. Food trapped in your teeth increases bacteria and plaque and causes decay, so its necessary to go the extra mile when you have Invisalign braces.

2. Before you go through your brushing and flossing routine, wait for 10-15 minutes. Your mouth goes through some natural self-cleaning processes after consuming food that will make brushing and flossing easier. During this period, you may want to chew Xylitol gum, which also encourages self-cleaning in your mouth by stimulating the salivary glands. Rinse your mouth out before and after you brush and floss your teeth.

3. Clean your Invisalign before putting the plates back into your mouth. Antibacterial soap and water are sufficient. Do not use hot water because it can warp the plates; always use cold water. While you eat, you may want to soak the plates, or use special equipment available from Invisalign. Bronx dentists can give you more information about preferred methods of soaking and cleaning your plates, as well.

4. If possible, before your Invisalign treatment, ask your Bronx dentist about sealing your teeth in order to prevent cavities. If this is something you can afford, it is well worth doing in order to prevent cavities.

5. Again, do not eat or drink anything (except water) with your trays in your mouth. Always take them out to eat and drink.

6. Do not eat processed or sugary foods, and refrain from coffee, tea, and carbonated soda.

It can be frustrating to go through the process of wearing Invisalign braces only to have cavities when you are done. Following these steps can go a long way in prevention.
