subject: Find A Baby Monitor That Is Suited To Your Needs [print this page]

For anyone who has recently become a parent no doubt the prospect of shopping for a baby monitor is not one that is necessarily appealing, however it has to be done so it's better to make a swift purchase. Even for someone who is simply looking to upgrade from an older model, the vast range of different brands, models, and features can quickly become overwhelming, despite the fact that you have some previous experience. Fortunately, there are a few points that you consider to make sure that youre getting a monitor that will meet your requirements.

It is quite common for people to find that their baby monitors are susceptible to interference; this is a serious issue as if the interference has any significant amplitude and is consistent it can quickly render the baby monitor completely useless. Monitors that operate on low frequencies are generally more likely to suffer from interference, though if you live in a quiet area then it is unlikely that you will run into any problems. However, if you live in a town or city then a monitor operating on a low frequency is likely to pick up transmissions from devices such as police radios, and although this might be an interesting prospect it is clearly not the desired effect. Baby monitors that operate on higher frequencies will cost a bit more but they will be far more effective if you live in a busy area.

A recent addition to modern baby monitors is the two-way communication, allowing the parent to talk back to the child and comfort them. If it is a long way up the stairs then this can provide a small amount of relief. Top end models even have video displays built into them, which can send images back to the receiver using the digital wireless signal. For that extra peace of mind there are also models that come with motion sensors, so if your baby stops moving for more than twenty seconds you will be alerted.

Aside from all these new features there are also some generic features that should be identified in all models. For instance battery life and noise control are two important factors in determining how effective a monitor is. Some models will have warning signals, such as flashing lights, for when the battery is low. While others will give no indication so you will have to constantly keep checking the battery or else potentially be left unaware that the device is not working. Newer models will also you to switch between a visual warning and an auditory one.
