Different Kinds Of Treatment For Ptsd

When an individual suffers a traumatic experience, feelings of anxiety, sadness, and alienation are normal. Now, if these emotions never dissipate and remain stagnant, that person may already be experiencing what is known as post traumatic stress disorder. PTSD is often associated with battle-weary soldiers and combat in war is the usual cause among men, this disorder can be caused by any overwhelming life event, most especially if the experience feels uncontrollable and unpredictable. In addition, PTSD is not only seen in the person directly impacted by the event, it can be experienced by people indirectly exposed to the event like emergency personnel and police officers as well.

Treatment of PTSD

Treatment of PTSD eliminates symptoms by helping the patient deal with the trauma and any remnants of the experience instead of avoiding it. The patient will be requested to recount and process the feelings and sensations experienced during the event. The memory of the trauma is sought to be erased, self-control restored, and all pent up emotions released. Mentioned below are the four treatment types.

1.Cognitive behavioral therapy

A patient is carefully and slowly exposed to the thoughts, situations, and emotions related to the trauma. Treatment also includes zeroing in on the upsetting thoughts about the event, specifically the irrational and distorted thoughts-and placing a more balanced, positive picture in its stead.

2. Family therapy

PTSD affects both the person and the people supporting him, thus family therapy is particularly effective. It helps family members develop a clear understanding of the patient's condition. The family can be helped to communicate better with each other and encouraged to work out family problems as well.

3.Medication

There are instances when medication is prescribed for individuals with PTSD to check secondary symptoms of anxiety or depression. Zoloft and Prozac are antidepressants usually prescribed to treat these symptoms. These medications can help reduce these symptoms, but it does not get rid of the cause of the PTSD.

4.Eye Movement Desentization and Reprocessing

EMDR includes aspects of cognitive therapy along with eye gestures and different rhythmic, right-left incitement like sounds or hand tapping. Eye movement and rhythmic taps are said to work because it "unfreezes" a region of the brain that processes everything which comes to a halt in extreme stress.
