Travelling From Dehradun To Mussoorie

Dehradun, situated at the foothills of the Himalayas, is the capital of the state of Uttarakhand. A small bustling town, Dehradun often forms the base of travel as it is the entry point to many popular tourist destinations like Mussoorie, Nainital, Auli, Haridwar, Rishikesh and the holy circuit of Chardham. Covered with pine forests, Dehradun is nestled between the Himalayan and the Shivalik ranges.

On the other hand, Mussoorie, popularly known as the Queen of Hills, is situated at a distance of 34 km from Dehradun. The popular sightseeing options in Mussoorie are the mall, Kempty falls, Jharipani Falls, Bhatta Falls, ropeway ride to the top of Gun Hills, Dhanaulti, Surkanda Devi and Mussoorie Lake.

Mussoorie is one of the most popular weekend destinations in the north and thus is always crowded and bustling with tourists.

The distance from Dehradun to Mussoorie is just 34 km. The drive from Dehradun, located at an elevation of 1350 m, to Mussoorie, at an elevation of 1825 m, takes about an hour and half to reach Mussoorie from Dehradun.
Travelling From Dehradun To Mussoorie


Dehradun is connected to Mussoorie by road. The roads from Dehradun to Mussoorie are two-lane and in good conditions, though during monsoons, landslides and flash floods do occur in these parts. There are about 10 hairpin curves on this road.

Mussoorie can be reached from Dehradun either by bus, taxi or your own car. State owned buses from Delhi, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Punjab have frequent buses operating from Dehradun to Mussoorie. There are various private bus operators as well. It is better to catch an early bus to Mussoorie, as the highway gets crowded during the day.

The regular buses charge Rs. 47 per trip from Dehradun to Mussoorie. Buses from Dehradun go to two different destinations in Mussoorie. Some of the buses go via Kempty Falls and directly terminate at the Mussoorie bus stand. These buses are available from the Hill Bus Services Section. Buses are also available to the Library end in Mussoorie, from where you will have to walk to the Kempty Bus stop and take a bus to the bus stand.

Deluxe buses are also available from the Dehradun bus stand and cost around Rs.150 per person.

Taxis are available from Dehradun to Mussoorie at around Rs.600 to Rs. 800 depending up on the car. The best option for lone travellers and backpackers is to travel by a shared taxi. Shared taxis are available outside the Dehradun railway station and the bus stand and charge around Rs 100 per person.

If driving in your own vehicle, one should take care as guardrails on the roads are missing at some places on the Dehradun-Mussoorie highway.

There are no trains or flights to Mussoorie from Dehradun.
