Body Contouring: Choosing The Perfect Doctor

Body contouring, when done right, can make a huge impact on how you look. The term itself refers to a variety of techniques and procedures designed to remove loose skin, take away excess fat, and generally give the patient the tight body they had hoped to have after losing weight. Of course, nature doesn't always cooperate with our desires, which is why plastic surgeons will never have a shortage of patients seeking their services. But whether you choose to have liposuction, thermage, lipodissolve, or any other procedure, you need to first make sure you're choosing the perfect doctor for those purposes.

Experience

It goes without saying that any doctor in a position to offer body contouring has the requisite education. But education, training, and experience are three different concepts. There is nothing stopping any medical doctor in the United States from offering any cosmetic enhancement surgery they choose. Thus, it is incumbent on the patient to make sure they are getting the experience that these procedures require. Make sure the doctor has been through the training it takes to become proficient in the techniques.

Board Certification

In many ways, this is a shortcut for patients to make sure they are choosing a surgeon well equipped with experience and education. As stated, there are relaxed standards when it comes to plastic surgery in the U.S. There are no laws stopping someone trained as a podiatrist, for example, from taking a weekend course in rhinoplasty and then offering it on Monday. As a patient concerned with getting excellent body contouring results, you need to make sure you're using a true plastic surgeon. Verifying board certification with the American Board of Plastic Surgery is the best way to do so.

Prior Results

A doctor who has been performing body contouring long enough to have the experience you should be looking for should also have examples of his work. With something like body contouring, it's important to see these examples. Make sure that the results you see in other patients are the same ones you're looking for in yourself. Obviously, the same techniques may not look exactly the same on every body type, but you should be able to get a fairly good idea of what you're in for. Never sign on with any doctor that refuses to show you before and after pictures of prior patients. This is one of the best ways you can make sure this is the perfect doctor for you.
