The Amazon Kindle Paperwhite is just a shade larger, thicker and heavier than previous models such as the Kindle 4 and remains very manageable for one-handed reading.

Buy Kindle Paperwhite. Its great for highlighting text and navigating but makes it ridiculously easy to bump through pages by mistake a hold switch would make sense.

Cheap Kindle Paperwhite. Amazon has given the Kindle Paperwhite a new OS, which feels much more like a tablet operating system as opposed to the neutered and plain OSs on past devices.

The Amazon Kindle Paperwhite will go for a maximum of 28 hours at a stretch. In real world use, we got 20+ hours between charges.

Turn on the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite and youll wonder how you ever coped with yesterdays ereaders. The light is cool and clear, the new fonts are much easier on the eye, and the reading features are simply seamless. But its far from perfect: it would be nice to have a non-touch version, the browser is rubbish and the home screen is very busy.

Granted, illuminating an e-ink screen is difficult. The most common solution is to use a nano-printed light guide the LEDs sit at the bottom of the device, and a thin plastic screen with tiny patterns etched into it carries the light toward the middle and top of the display. The scores gradually disperse the beams, allowing more light to permeate to the top as the nano guides get further form the light source.

The Paperwhite uses four embedded LEDs to light its surface. The LEDs channel their light into a clear sheet of material that acts as a light guide, diffusing the light across the entire display. The approach is similar to the one Barnes & Noble uses with its Nook Simple Touch with Glowlight, but Amazons software implementation adjusts the hue of the lighting so that the page appears whiter as you advance the light level toward the high end of its 24 levels of brightness.

The higher-resolution display, coupled with the Paperwhites careful attention to font rendering, yields text thats easy on the eyes. Fonts looked smoother than on last years Kindle Touch, and this Kindle offers seven of themfour more than were available on its predecessor. That helps make the Paperwhite much more competitive, since the Nook Simple Touch has six fonts, and both the Kobo Touch eReader and the Sony Reader have seven.

Even when it was first released in 2007, the first-generation Kindle was a bit dated -- a big, bulky thing cluttered with keys and buttons. By the time the sleek third-gen model came out, it was clear that industrial design had moved up on Amazon's list of priorities. With last year's Kindle Touch, Amazon ditched the QWERTY keyboard, and now it's taking things a step further with the Paperwhite.

Earlier this month along with the Kindle Fire HD tablets Amazons CEO Jeff Bezos took to the stage and announced this new and improved 6-inch Kindle reader. Being the first of its kind (from Amazon at least) were giving it a thorough look. With an improved experience, better hardware, and of course a front-lit screen this is worth a second glance.

Android tablet makers also rely on hardware sales. While Google provides their system software for free, the search giant keeps a cut of app and digital media sales made via its Google Play marketplace.

Mr Bezos said that part of the reason his strategy worked was that users' appetite for media appeared to grow once they owned one of his devices.
