Can The Online World Make Or Break Your Job Search

Most of us who seek jobs in India, seek them online with HR Management Consultants who offer HR Solutions of recruitment and job seeking. In fact, employers also have tie ups with these consulting firms and digital companies to seek out the best talent pool. Of course, most of it happens online and thus, both potential employees and employers can be found registered on websites like Career Prospects to get best jobs or candidates (as the case may be).

So, when the world is going digital and completely online, do you think a person's personality can be represented in an online manner? Do you think a scandalous Facebook picture or a drunk tweet can hamper a person's chance of bagging a job? Well, in the past reference checks used to mean calling up friends and family for a background check - which is true even today. But do you think a candidate's online personality and image may make or hurt his/her chances of bagging that dream job?

Are you everywhere on social media? Active on Facebook, tweeting at every opportunity, uploading pictures etc. All that is great and it is your personal life but for e.g. if you are trying for a marketing job at an FMCG and the HR manager of that company comes across a drunk and abusive tweet from your account, well, the chances of you making a good impression on him/her are very less. This is in no way indicating that you will fail but first impressions count! These days, maintaining a professional yet unique and fun digital/social media image is essential because the world is fast moving in that direction.

At the same time, if you are no where to be found in any digital or social media platform, the chances are you are too passive for the fast paced corporate world! This is the age of online persona and you need to build a solid online profile too.

Online world tends to make people say and write lots of things which they may never do so in actual/real life. If you have a personal blog of your own and also hunting for a job online, just make sure that your language is formal and non-abusive, racial or indiscreet.

Many candidates also tend to informal and too casual in how they write their resumes, how they update their LinkedIn profile, language in the cover letter etc. It is great to be fun, creative, unique and let your personality come out of these platforms but at the same time, always remember that you are the one seeking the job! So, maintain a professional, formal and sincere tone (written) all the time.

India is fast emerging as the leader in digital technology in the Eastern part of the World! Take your job hunt seriously and always be professional across all digital, online and social media platforms - that is a sure mantra to find a great job in India.
