Local Trains are operated by Indian Railways. They have three zones, Western Railways, Central Railways and Harbour line. A local train carries more than 7 million commuters daily. The density of local trains of carrying passengers is the highest among any urban railway system in the world. It was first built by British in India in April 1853. It is the oldest railway system in India.

The railways have faced rapid expansion since 1991. The western line starts the local train from Churchgate Station and goes to Virar. The Central line starts the local train from Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus and goes up to two ends i.e. Karjat and Kasara. The Harbour line has only double lines and so they do not have any fast trains on it. They always operate as slow services. One of the Harbour line starts from Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus and goes upto Andheri via Wadala in CST-Andheri route. Another is from CST to Panvel in CST- Panvel route.

Fourth is for Ladies First Class compartment. Fifth is a Luggage compartment. Sixth is for Handicapped and Cancer patients. And seventh is for Senior Citizens. These trains keep on working day and nights. There have been several bomb blasts and terrorist attacks but then to people didn't stop travelling by train.

The local trains are built up of stainless steel and have non cushioned seats in general compartments. It also has station indicators and GPS Public information system in all the compartments. A 12 coach train can carries around 3500 passengers only but it is always overcrowded and cannot be counted in numbers. Air conditioners cannot be installed in local trains but they have forced ventilation blowers and also fans to keep the commuters breathing.

To solve the problem of overcrowding the 9 coach local trains were replaced with 12 coaches. The trains are running at every 4 minute of intervals. Tourists are advised to not to travel during week days.

The number of fatalities every year by local trains is also highest than any other urban railway system. Many people die while travelling with local trains and many of them gets injured. Some deaths are because of crossing the tracks and some die when they seat on train roofs. Travellers of local trains also die by hitting to the poles near the tracks while hanging on the doors in an overcrowded train. To reduce this deadliest risk of fatalities, automatic doors are going to be installed in local trains by 2016. Let us travel safely and take care of each other while travelling.
