One can opt for any of the non-stop flights daily operated by different airlines like Kingfisher, Indigo, GoAir, Jetlite and Spicejet to choose from. The flying time is around one and a half hours.

However, the best way to travel from Chennai to Pune is by train. The Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) web site facilitates online booking of tickets and from the railway reservation counters. Trains to Pune depart from the Chennai Central Railway Station and Egmore Railway Station and terminate at Pune Junction. Chennai Express (12164), Mumbai Express (11040) and Mumbai Mail (11028), Madgaon Chennai Express (3644), Pune Chennai Daily (8235), Aurangabad Chennai Express (550) and Gaya Chennai Express (7864) are some of the trains connecting Chennai and Pune. It takes around 24 to 27 hours to complete the journey.

The travel time on road without a break is about 20 hours. This route is frequented by heavy vehicles like transport lorries. If one is game to driving your own vehicle, one should be careful not to drive at night.

The recommended route between Pune and Chennai is via National Highway 48, passing through cities like Khandala, Satara, Kohlapur, Belgaum, Hubli, Chithradurga, Chikkaballapur, and Chittor. The route is dotted with petrol pumps, hotels and restaurants for convenience. One can also take the routes through the National Highway 13 and National Highway 9.

There are several private and government buses that provide services from Chennai to Pune. The most convenient is the overnight sleeper buses that charge Rs. 2000 per traveller.

Private taxis and cabs are also available from Chennai to Pune. Not a very feasible option, the hired taxis charge from Rs. 22,000 onwards for a round trip, depending upon the type of vehicle chosen by the traveller.
