Surat is one of the major industrial cities of Gujarat with a population of 45 lakhs approximately. Formerly known as Suryapur, it lies on the banks of Tapti River. Till 17th century, Surat was the capital of British East India Company. Surat is often called the diamond capital of the world as 92% of the cutting and polishing of diamonds in the world is done here. Surat is also famous for its textile industry.

Mumbai is the capital of Maharashtra state with a population around 20 million. It is called the commercial capital of India as many important financial institutions and the corporate head offices of many companies are located here. Mumbai is located to the south of Surat at an approximate distance of 279 km. Both the cities are well connected by road and rail. Gujarat state highway (SH 140) connects Surat to Mumbai. From Dahisar, on the Mumbai border, to Bandra the western express highway can be used by travellers. If you are driving your own car from Surat you take Ansuian road, Swami Dayanand Sagar marg, SH 6, Udhana CNG circle, tower road and grid road to reach state highway SH140. After driving through 217 km long stretch of SH140 you can catch up western express highway to reach Bandra in Mumbai. The distance from Surat to Mumbai can be covered in 4.5 hours depending upon the traffic on the roads.

Private bus operators are running buses from Surat to Mumbai with varied amenities. Depending on the services provided, bus fares vary from Rs 500/- for a non- A/c bus to Rs 1000/- for an A/c bus. Volvo multi-axle semi sleeper class buses are also available, the fare being Rs 2200/- approximately. Buses normally take 6 to 6.5 hours to reach Mumbai. There are a few Gujarat govt. buses plying between Surat and Mumbai. Though the charges are less (Rs 270/-) running time will be more for these. In case of urgency one can hire taxi cars; the fare depends on the type of vehicle. An ordinary car will cost around Rs12/ km and a luxury type Rs 55/ km.

The rail link from Surat to Mumbai is one of the busiest in India. There are many trains connecting these two cities including passenger, express, superfast and Rajdhani trains. The average time taken by rail is 4 hours for express trains and 7.5 hours for passenger trains. Certain trains like12010 Dn Shatabdi express take just 3 hour 33 minutes to reach Mumbai. Nearest airport to Surat is Bhavanagar, 75 km away from where direct flights are available to Mumbai.
