Featured on the square is the Royal Palace, which was built in the 17th century Also on the square is the oldest continuously active opera house in Europe, the 18th century Teatro di San Carlo.

Naples is also the home of many fine old churches, starting with the 14th century Cathedral (Duomo), San Lorenzo Maggiore, Santa Chiara and many more. The Catholic religion is very important to the people of Naples, and this is definitely apparent with the many beautiful churches.
