The recommended route between Mumbai and Chennai is via National Highway 48, passing through cities like Lonavala, Pune, Khandala, Satara, Kohlapur, Belgaum, Hubli, Chithradurga, Chikkaballapur, and Chittor. There are several petrol pumps on the route and several small hotels are also located on the way. Alternate routes are through the National Highway 13 and National Highway 9.

There are several bus operators, both private and government, that provide services from Mumbai to Chennai. Sleeper buses are available overnight from Mumbai and Chennai that charge Rs. 2000 per traveller.

Private taxis and cabs are also available from Mumbai to Chennai. Not a very feasible option, the hired taxis charge from Rs. 22,000 to Rs. 34,000 rupees for a round trip, depending upon the type of vehicle chosen by the traveller.

The best way to travel from Mumbai to Chennai is by train. Being both economical and tireless, it is always better to book your train tickets well in advance. Trains depart from 3 stations in Mumbai, Mumbai CSTM and Dadar, and terminate at Chennai, at Chennai Central and Egmore. The main trains connecting Mumbai and Chennai, daily are Chennai Express (12163), Mumbai Express (11041) and Mumbai Mail (11027). Other trains like Madgaon Chennai Express (3643), Pune Chennai Daily (8234), Aurangabad Chennai Express (551) and Gaya Chennai Express (7863) are some of the slower trains reaching Chennai from Mumbai.

For those who do not mind spending, air travel is an option to travel from Chennai to Mumbai. There are around 50 non-stop flights daily operated by different airlines like Kingfisher, Indigo, GoAir, Jetlite and Spicejet to choose from. The flying time is around one and a half hours.
