Regular Cleaning And Polishing Will Extend The Life Of Your Greek Sandals

Of all the natural materials that Mother Nature has provided us with, leather is certainly one of the most fascinating. Leather is a very tough material yet it will gradually deteriorate if not properly looked after. It can be crafted into all sorts of articles from shoes, coats, handbags, belts, and even Greek sandals. Leather comes from the skins and hides of animals. Nature has its way of nourishing and maintaining animals' skins in perfect form as long as they are alive but when humans obtain the same skins and convert them into leather they take over these essential tasks. Care and maintenance is mandatory if you want any of your leather items to last long and maintain their original appearance.

The type of leather an item is made of determines how you should take care for it. However, all leather items require to be regularly cleaned and the natural oils in the leather replenished. Looking after Greek sandals won't be particularly difficult once you have taken note of the kind of leather they are made of and considered how often you wear them.

The first step in caring for leather sandals is ensuring that one's feet are clean and dry when wearing the sandals. This is necessary because if your feet are dirty and/or moist when wearing the sandals you will introduce a layer of grime inside them which will not only gradually discolor the leather but also generate a bad odor. Greek sandals require regular cleaning if they are worn often. They should be cleaned at least once a month using special leather cleaning products. Rather than clean your sandals with regular detergents, shop for moisturizing leather soaps that can clean leather without stripping away its natural oils, which is what keeps it supple and soft.

Leather loses its natural oils even when it is not being used. It is also susceptible to damage by environmental factors such as oxidation, ultraviolet rays, and chemicals in the atmosphere such as nitrous acids. If you therefore leave your Greek sandals exposed for a long time they will begin to dry out, crack and flake, a sign that the leather is in dire need of dressing. There are many waxes and leather polishes in the market that can be used to protect and restore the leather to a healthy state even as it ages. If left unpolished for long enough, leather can slowly disintegrate into dust. Although this may not happen to your sandals (this process takes a long time), you can be sure that their fine appearance will gradually go down. To prevent this from happening, ensure that you have thoroughly waxed and polished them at least once in three months.
