subject: Accessories And Spares For The Off Road Driver To Make Life Safer. [print this page]

The majority of SUV, jeeps and other 4wd vehicles virtually never leave that paved road. The merest thought of taking them through mud baths and fording rivers or plowing through deep sand would never occur to the owner. A large 4x4 auto and these jeeps and Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) are nice cars to drive. Set up for road use the suspension is pleasant and that seats are comfortable. Very important is the height of the driver above the road and driving position makes them ideal as mostly one is sitting above the other vehicles on the road and thus has a view over most other autos. It is also nice to take kids to school as they are generally more roomy than a normal sedan.

But there are those people, farmers and camping enthusiasts as well as folk who like a challenge that off road driving offers. For them it is a certainty that their vehicles will be set up differently from the general, off the sales floor, kind of 4wd auto which is by and large mom's taxi.

For a start they are almost certainly going to have a raised or hardened suspension and wider tires. For on road usage, by which is meant paved roads these tires would be inappropriate as they cost substantially more and will wear out a lot faster as the abrasion from turning is greater. Driving across rough roads, across sand or through rivers and muddy patches needs soft, chunky tires with as big a footprint as possible are very useful. All of these guys will carry on board compressors or compressed air in a bottle so they can let down or increase that tire pressures depending on need.

Another great accessory for the off road enthusiast is the winch. Smittybilt winches are add on accessories that can be fit to the front and or the back of a 4wd vehicle. The uses are numerous but just some of these can occur when this vehicle gets stuck in soft sand or mud. Of course it is more likely that the driver will be using his winch to tow another vehicle out of the sticky soft stuff he has got himself stuck in.

Should one need to pull oneself out or up over something and there is no satisfactory anchor point a solution is to take the spare wheel and bury it at the limit of the winches cable. A buried spare wheel will give a very good anchor and once one starts pulling one will find that the vehicle will pop out and drag itself through the mire, ably assisted by the 4wd in low range and possibly diff lock.

There are a large range of Smittybilt XRC winches available with a number of different power and gearing options suitable for the light and small or the large and heavy vehicle. All are available at a discount on the website. If you are looking for any accessory for your off road automobile this is the place to start. peruse through that on-line catalog.
