The buses and cars take 8 to 10 hours to travel as the whole road passes through hills. A number of buses ply between Shimla and Manali, but the most important of them is the Himachal Roadways transport Corporation (HRTC). There are deluxe non-AC bus services between Shimla and Manali. There are no Volvo buses plying between Shimla and Manali. The bus fare for a deluxe non AC bus would be Rs.500 per person.

One can also travel from Shimla to Manali by car. There are taxi and cab services connecting Shimla with Manali. The cost of cab fare is approximately Rs. 6,000 for a round trip. There are restaurants and dhabas catering to the needs of travellers. There are also gas stations with rest room facilities en route to Manali from Shimla.

There is no airport in Manali. The nearest airport is Pathankot Airport which is 173 km from Manali. Hence there are flights to Manali from Shimla.

There is no option to travel to Manali from Shimla by train. The nearest Broad gauge railhead is in Chandigarh which is also at the same distance from Manali as Shimla is. Hence the best option to travel from Shimla to Manali is by bus or car.
