subject: Why Should You Take A Family Member To Your Hearing Test? [print this page]

A hearing test is an opportunity for you to sit down and talk to your audiologist about your condition. Though you will eventually go into a soundproof room and go through a series of tests to determine the quality of your ability to hear, there is also a timeframe for asking questions m. Often, this is one of the most important parts of the screening because it provides your doctor with an opportunity to talk to you and to your family members about what may be occurring.

Talk About Your Symptoms

One of the reasons to bring along a family member to your screenings is because it will be the ideal way to learn about what is happening with you. Before the hearing test, the doctor will ask for any symptoms you may have. Those symptoms are not just the ones you personally are experiencing but also the ones your family may be experiencing. For example, you may not realize how many times your family calls your name before you respond. You may not realize that the phone is ringing or that there is someone ringing the doorbell. In other cases, your family members may not know what your symptoms are and you will need to share those.

A Good Conversation

While you are talking to the doctor, he or she may ask you and your family member to talk to each other. This is an opportunity for the doctor to see what you may and may not be hearing based on what you say and do. If you are unable to hear certain sounds or words, it can be an indicator to the doctor of the specific type of loss in your ability to hear. You may be unable to hear anything at all. That is something the doctor is going to look for in this process as well. By allowing you to talk to a family member, he or she can see your interactions more fully.

The Support Helps Too

Of course, having someone by your side through this trying time can also be very helpful. You will want to be able to talk to that person about what is happening and what it may mean to you. It is sometimes a good thing just to be able to tell your family member how you feel about the situation.

Taking a family member with you to a hearing test can be one of the most important things you do for yourself. It can help you to learn about what your loved ones are experiencing as well as help others to know what you are going through.
