subject: How To Choose The Right Bottle For Your Baby [print this page]

With so many baby bottles on the market, choosing the right one can sometimes be confusing. The Avent bottle is one of the more popular brands, but there are many things to consider when shopping for a baby bottle. Knowing what to look for can really help you narrow down the search.

If you plan to bottle feed only, the shape of the nipple on the bottle isn? really all that important. You don? need to look for a bottle that is designed to resemble a breast nipple. You only need to make sure your baby will happily drink from the bottle. If you do plan to breastfeed most of the time and bottle feed occasionally, you will want to find a bottle that has a nipple that closely resembles that of a mother? breast. That? because some babies have a hard time going from the wide latch of a mother? breast to a narrow nipple on a bottle.

AVENT bottles have numbers on them that represent the nipple flow rate. Starting out at a 1 means you are getting a bottle with a very slow flow rate. A newborn baby will need a slower nipple at first. If a baby drinks too quickly from a bottle, it can cause them to have tummy troubles including gas and indigestion. As your baby gets older and more use to drinking from a bottle, you can switch to a faster flowing nipple such as an Avent bottle 2 or 3.

Many parents are switching from plastic to glass bottles because of the concern over chemicals being found in some plastics. But as long as you buy a bottle that is BPA-free, you are ok with plastic. When the chemical BPA is heated, it leaches the chemical into the liquid that you are consuming. Look for AVENT bottles that are BPA-free to ensure the safety and health of your baby.

When you have a newborn baby, you don? necessarily need a 9 ounce bottle. Since newborn babies do not eat that much in one sitting, you will be fine with a 4 ounce bottle. As your infant gets older, you will need a bigger bottle to hold more formula or breastmilk. Look for bottles that have easy to read measurements. An Avent bottle has the measurements clearly printed on them so you know how much you are feeding your baby.

You can find the right bottle for your baby once you decide what your infant? needs are. Sometimes it will take trial and error before you find a bottle that your baby really likes.
