Rameswaram lies in the Pamban island of Ramanathapuram district in the state of Tamil Nadu. Pamban Bridge connects it with the main land. As per the legend, Lord Ram had his army assembled here before the final assault on Ravans Lanka. It is a part of the Char Dhams pilgrimage for Hindus. Main occupations of the islanders are fishing and tourism related services. Main tourist attraction is Ramanathaswami temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and its 197 mt long corridor which is the longest temple corridor in the world. Other attractions include Pamban Bridge, 64 Thirthams (holy wells), Gandhamathana Parvatham, Kothanda Ramaswami Temple and the 323 meter high TV tower which is the tallest in India.

Madurai, famous for the Meenakshi Amman Temple lies on the banks of the River Vaigai. With a population of 10,16,885 it is the second largest Municipality in the state of Tamil Nadu. It is the centre of learning for Tamil language, art and music. Madurais morning flower market attracts nearly 2000 farmers daily. Madurai Meenakshi temple with 14 gopurams ( Gateway Towers) attracts thousands of devotees and tourists daily. Other places of attraction include Vandiyur Mariamman Teppakulam, and Thirumalai Nayak Palace.

Eighty percent of the area of Rameswaram town is covered by roads including National highways. National Highway NH49 connects Rameswaram to Madurai. National Highways NH47, 49, 45B and 208 pass through Madurai. From Rameswaram to Madurai the distance is 173 km and can be covered in 3 hours in a car. Head west from Rameswaram on to NH49, drive through Pamban Bridge to Mandapam (22 km), further to Ramanathapuram (36 km) and Manamadurai (67 km) and finally to Madurai (48 km). One can hire a taxi car to travel from Rameswaram to Madurai. Running time will be nearly 4 hours and round trip fares vary from Rs 3500/- for an a/c Tata Indica to Rs 4900/- for a Tavera a/c car. There are some Tamil Nadu government buses for Madurai from Rameswaram bus stand and they charge nearly Rs 50/- for the trip.

Rameswaram is connected to Madurai by rail link and the distance is 161 km.There are some starting trains from Rameswaram station for Madurai. Madurai junction is an A1 graded station of Southern Railway. To travel from Rameswaram to Madurai there are six direct trains. There are three passenger trains nos-56722, 56724 and 56726 , the running time being 3 hours 55 minutes. There are three express starting from Rameswaram, 16733 Rameswaram- Okha weekly express, 16780 Rameswaram- Tirupati tri-weekly express and 22621 Rameswaram- Kanyakumari tri-weekly express. These express trains complete Rameswaram to Madurai journey in about three hours.
