How To Safeguard Your Privacy Online

Privacy when surfing online is a growing concern. While it's not as bad in democratic countries as in those with firewalls, there really are instances when you'd need to put extra measures with your online privacy, in order to protect yourself from identity theft.

Two ways of protecting your online privacy would be:
Use a browser with a private browsing function, like Google Chrome.

Use a proxy server when you surf.

These two methods would work well when you're surfing from public computers, like in the public library, or through commercial Internet stations. Always remember to clear cookies and private data before you leave the computer station. However, when you're using your own computer or tablet when going online, here is a major way to protect yourself when you're out and about:

Don't use open Wi-Fi networks. Bring your own gadget or means of going online. Surfing using other people's Internet connections will leave you open to possible identity theft because these networks are not secure. Hackers could be "listening" in to these connections and intercept your logins to crucial websites like financial or online banking sites. When intercepted, they could retrieve your login details, get into your accounts and clean it out of even up to everything.

Consider getting a data plan with your Android, iOS or Wi-Fi tethering-capable smart phone. This way, you could browse securely, even on your laptop, using your own connection, when hanging out in coffee shops, restaurants, or the mall.

You could also get hacked even from the comfort of your own home. So as a rule, when interacting with others online:

Don't give out your home address.

Don't ever give out your SS Number.

Do use different passwords for different websites.

Do use two-step verification processes for the websites that have these. Gmail and Facebook both have these functions, so it's better to use Gmail over any other mail service.

We all know it's illegal, but just as a reminder, NEVER use P2P or torrent sites. Files from these services could be infected with malware, or are actually software that will allow hackers to gain access to crucial details stored on your computer.

Never get too chummy with strangers you meet online. While there are a lot of great people out there with good hearts, there's always a serial killer or two out there.

Keep a firewall on your Internet connection via your router, as well as on your computer. This way, you have a measure of privacy protection from people who will try to hack into your computer through open ports.

Use secure passwords. A good mix of letters, numbers, as well as special characters will always be more difficult for a spider or hacking software to crack through. It is also more secure from amateur hackers who will manually try to guess your password.

Avoid the "weird" side of the internet. The dark forums for people with weird interests will certainly be places for hackers and people with sick minds to hang out in. If you don't want to attract the jokers, keep away from where they hang out. Protect your personal information especially in these areas.

Remember that these tips are not 100% fool-proof because some smart guy with a sick mind or too much time on his hands could always find a way to beat the system. But in general, these are good enough to protect privacy, especially your personal, crucial information.
