Cloud Forests

A walk in the clouds is something that shouldnt be missed in Costa Rica! The perfect place to experience it is Monteverde, which, with its high altitude of about 4,662 feet (1,440 metres) above sea level, receives a constant amount of moisture in the form of a cloud fog that hangs on the branches of the tallest trees and drips down to the other organisms below. This creates a unique ecosystem vastly different from any other. It is complex and highly diverse, containing over 100 species of mammals, 400 species of birds, tens of thousands of insect species, and over 2,500 varieties (and even more species) of plants, including1400 species of orchids.

Wonderful Beaches

Costa Ricas 750 miles (1200 kilometres) of shoreline offers many different versions of an idyllic beach paradise to choose from. Playa Nacascolos wonderfully soft white sand beach is considered by many to be the best on the Papagayo Peninsula, and its warm waters are ideal for swimming.

Playa Samara is also a great area for beach buffs, with a number of undeveloped and practically deserted beaches along the Guanacaste coast. Palm trees back the long, crescent-shaped paradise of Playa Carrillo just south of Smara, while a walk northward on dirt roads will lead you to the hidden treasures of Playa Barrigona and Playa Buena Vista.

Arenal Volcano

Arenal Volcano, believed to be one of the ten most active volcanoes in the world, is the centrepiece of Arenal Volcano National Park in the northern lowlands and a highlight of many Costa Rican trekking holidays. Visits here include more rainforest hikes and, for those seeking more action, horse-back riding, rappelling and white-water rafting through majestic rapids can also be included.
