Chennai, also identified as Gateway to South India is capital city of the state of Tamil Nadu. It is the short form of Chennapattanam, the town that was merged along with another town Madraspattinam to form Chennai. Mahabalipuram also known as Mamallapuram is a small town in Kancheepuram district, Tamil Nadu. It is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The popular historic monuments in Mahabalipuram were constructed between seventh and ninth centuries. Some of the monuments include the Thirukadalmallai (temple of Lord Vishnu), Varaha Cave Temple, The shore temple and the Pancha Rathas.

Mahabalipuram is located at a distance of 60km from Chennai. You can travel from Chennai to Mahabalipuram only by road.

Regular bus services both private and public are available from Chennai to Mahabalipuram. Mahabalipuram bus station is located close to the city center and can be reached easily by foot. Alternately you can also hire private taxis for a relaxed travel. Drive to Mahabalipuram from Chennai takes about one and half hour. The route is simple and will be on the old Mamallapuram road via Okkiyam Thuraipakkam, Navallur and Covelong. On the way you can find eateries serving meals and snacks and HP petrol pump. Bank ATMs are also available to withdraw cash if required. The drive in taxi along the coast of Bay of Bengal is breathtaking and is the preferred way to travel from Chennai to Mahabalipuram by majority of tourists who can afford to hire private taxi. Travel by bus is cheaper and is preferred means of transport if you are travelling alone or not carrying luggage.
How To Travel From Chennai To Mahabalipuram


Mahabalipuram does not have a railway station. Hence, there are no direct trains from Chennai to Mahabalipuram. The nearest railway station to Mahabalipuram is Chengalpattu. Take a direct train from Chennai to Chengalpattu located at distance of 30 km from Mahabalipuram. From the Chengalpattu station taxis are available to Mahabalipuram. Trains to Chengalpattu depart from Chennai Egmore station. Express trains connecting Chengalpattu to Chennai are available on all days. The train journey takes about an hour. There are limited services from Chennai to Chengalpattu. Hence, check the timetable and plan the trip accordingly. Travel by train is economical as well as comfortable. However, it would be cumbersome to take a taxi or bus after the train journey especially with kids and seniors or with heavy luggage.

There is no airport at Mahabalipuram. Hence, there are no flights connecting the two places.
